Bon d'accord mais ca risque d'etre un peu long...

Fifty years ago, George ORWELL imagined the ideal English pub. This exercise is always in fashion in England. This perfect pub called “The Moon Under Water” and his advantages were a family atmosphere and a Victorian setting. But the perfection doesn’t exist in this world so this pub doesn’t exist.
In spite of this reality, the pubs are, since more 100 years the number one of English’s leisure.
So how a pub is good or not?
Is the beer? The food? The music? The games? The user-friendliness? The proximity of house? The cheap price of pint? These factors are important but the principal is the so British atmosphere.

The typically British pub is a place of meeting where the environment is especially pleasant.
The style and the place of the pubs determine the type of customers.
The pubs in village have rustic movables and their beers are production by craftsmen. This type of pub attracts the local population but the townsman, the rambler and the pensioner come in order to eat.
In the town, the customers are more different, there are some businessman, women, and group of friends.
A good conversation and a good beer are two advantages in a pub.
All bosses say that the beer is the base of his commerce.
We say that the beer is the best drink for a pub; she is serving in a generous quantity (one pint glass).
The word “pub” is a contraction of “public house”. Nowadays there is a difference between the pubs and the Free (Free house) because the Free defend the local beer whereas the pubs serve the same beer.

THE PUBS AND THE FOOD

In our times lot of pubs serves equally food, they serve even a complete meal. The variety and the quality are amazing!
The request of customers increase. So, pubs cooking meal for the family, the vegetarians, the person who is on a diet, the hurry employee, the tourist with little money, the traditional meal, the romantic dinner and the list continue.
Don’t worry, if you are green with envy for a meal, there is a pub with the perfect meal, for you.
The quality is increase. The best traditional food is in the pubs and is cheap. That’s why lot of family makes the Sunday lunch in a pub.

Some figures

- Pubs serve 3,5 millions of meal per day

- More than 18 millions of people eat once a month in pubs

- More than 8 millions of people take their dominical lunch in pubs (once a
month)

- Nearly 9 pubs of 10 serve to eat

- More than 12 millions people go in pubs once a week, so is the most
popular activity after the television

THE PUBS AND THE GAME

The pub is the centre of social life and the divertissement in England since many years.
Now is the bet, the dominos, the dart and the electronics game that are main game in a pub.
500 years ago, customers prefer the game like Backgammon. In fact this is one of the oldest games in the pubs. It’s come in England while the 11th century probably with the crusades. Some laws tried to check this game but on contrary it’s increase his popularity.
Few of games have resist again the time, but if you visit the “Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem” in Nottingham, who is pretend that is the oldest pub in England, you will see a game who is play here while 700 years. This g ame call “Ringing the Bull”.
On the contrary, some games seem to be old whereas they are more recent. The snooker is appear in 1930, the dart appear in 20Th century. The popularity of dart increase in 1925, when the king and the queen played at this game, at the time of a visit in Slough.
Today there are 6 millions of English people who practice dart.

MORE INFORMATION

There are approximately 65,000 pubs in the United-Kingdom; they sell between 15 and 20 brands of beers.
The prices of beer in the English pubs are in the best of the European market though the taxes are very important.
Six English adult out of ten be say to like pubs and more of one out of four are going to pubs minimum once by the week. The pubs sell more of 3,5 millions of snack every day.
There are more of 22,000 different names of pubs in the United-Kingdom, but the Red Lion is very current. Two foreign out of three like more the English pubs than their usual bar, the pubs give every year more of 60 millions of pound to the charity. The older pub of Great Britain is the “Fighting Cocks” in St Albans, Herts. The walls were built in the 11th century.

You must know that before going to a pub

There is not waiter in the English pub, you must go to bar for take your drinks. If you are a group, it is best than one or two takes the drinks for the other people.
For to have your drink, you must attract the barman but not lot of noise and not lot of gesticulation.
If you pay just for you, you must command just your drink. But if you command for all, you must pay for all. In lots of pubs, you must pay when you command your drinks.
A pint of beer is 0.568 L and a half is ½ of pint. For command, you must just say, “Half of bitter, please” or “Half of lager, please”. The bitter is the local beer and the lager is a draught beer. In Scotland and in the north of Ireland, a half can be a whisky. The word “bar” can mean a pub or a room of pub with a counter. You can find a pub with room’s name is “Public Bar”(classic) or “Lounge Bar” or “Saloon Bar”.
There is not typical pub, there are more of 65,000 pubs and there are all different. You will found all the time the ideal pub for you. There is not special technical for command a snack in a pub. Some pubs take the commands on counter but it is possible there is an other bar for the snack. However, the drinks must be to command on waiter.
In general, the children (- 14 years old) are forbidden in the pub but some pubs agree to the children come in. The pubs can change with the time, on midday, the pubs are often quietness and on evening they can become noisy with lots of young people. The pubs are often open between 11 a.m. and 11.30 p.m. The drinks are served until 11 p.m.
The toilets are reserved to the customers. For lots of English, the pub is a second home and some people are more often at the pub than their home.
The rule more important for the discussion in a pub is: take nothing very seriously!

Now than you know that, you can go to pubs.
