Default present progressive

Re-bonjour,

Merci

It 1 was raining when I 2 woke up last Saturday. It 3 always rains when I 4 am not working. pourquoi ne dit-on pas "when I do not work"?

Merci mille fois.
Hela

A+

Salut Hela

This webpage may help. This tense is called the present continuous on this web page. I don't know why it has to be used under the circumstance you describe. Although I have heard it both ways, I usually hear the former version, i.e., "It always rains when I am not working."

Btw, you would say "I do not work on sunny days." Not "I am not working on sunny days." (Unless you told you boss "I am not going to work on sunny days." LOL. You could say "I am not working on Christmas." Which is like saying "I am not going to work on Christmas." Maybe it depends on the cause-effect relationship. You could, for example, say "It is always sunny when I am not working."

This probably just confused the issue LOL.
