Titre: "Towards a step quality of the networks services"

##################################################
Introduction

I’ve carried out my training period at APAVE Company during six months, to achieve my data processing engineer formation in the network speciality. I’ve worked in the Artigues agency located near Bordeaux city, in France. According to my speciality, I’ve integrated the network cell in the data processing department

This cell network has the role of managing the data-processing network of Apavesudeurope which is composed about sixty sites distributed between the south of France, Guyana, the Reunion and New Caledonia.

The needs unceasingly increasing for the network of APAVE, in term of infrastructure, applicative maintenance, management of the data impose from today on the cell network more rigorous follow-up, more formalized operations carried out by the data processing specialists of the company.

The installation of a step quality will allow a more effective management of the problems and a better reactivity in the long term. The “service” notion is a key element of this step quality, “service” term mean the work offered by the network cell.

The step quality includes several things as the way we use to manage the requests and how we inform replicants. It includes also the process which will use in intern to treat the request in the best way. The users who request the cell network to do a task are often being part themselves of other data-processing cells of the company.

For that, the cell network must immediately be able to reach to parameters such as the limits of the service, the time it takes to realize an operation, the budget… It must also be possible to reach complete dashboards, gathering all these information as well as internal procedures and the state of the service.

The state of the service depending most of the time on the machine which the service uses, it agrees to constantly know the servers state of the data-processing network. The system must also alert in real time the administrators of a breakdown on the network.

To complete the network monitoring it also necessary to develop a tool which will permits to ensure a rigorous follow-up of the machines, replacements, breakdown services and various interventions.

To supplement this advanced management of the material park it became also necessary to have a better management of IP addresses. In addition to IP addresses delivered automatically by DHCP, management software should be able to ensure a traceability of the use of the addresses and to propose a standard model of organization of the addresses employments.

The step quality, in extern way, the user must be able to reach all information necessary to know the procedures of request and to use a cell network service.

The object of this memory is to see what solutions can be planned in optics to lead the cell network to a step quality enabling it to gain in time and effectiveness in the management of the services

About APAVE

The story of Apave starts in 1867 when the SMI (Company of the Industrialists of Mulhouse - “Société des Industriels de Mulhouse”) have assembled an association called APAV (Association of the Owners of Apparatuses with Vapor – “Association des Propriétaires d’Appareils à Vapeur”).

Thereafter, the Associations equipped with a service electricity add an E to their name to become: APAVE (Association of the Owners of Apparatuses with Vapor and Electric – “Association des Propriétaires d’Appareils à Vapeur et Electriques”). The APAVE logo spreads in the years 1950.

In 1954 there were the creation of the grouping of APAVE (GAPAVE), and the company of edition of APAVE (SADAVE).

Today, after many fusions, 4 APAVE cover France and the DOM TOM:
- Alsatian APAVE (1867)
- North-West APAVE (fusion 2000)
- Parisian APAVE (1875)
- APAVE SUDEUROPE (fusion 2004)

APAVE is an independent organization, a reference in the control of the technical and environmental risks, and propose a complete range of expertises and trades, allowing to cover all of the needs of the company, as regards safety of the workers, the safety of the people, safety/maintenance of machines and products, the management of quality and performance, the processes optimization of industrial development, the durable development, and professional training.

Subsidiary APAVE companies are established in all the departments, including the DOM-TOM, 130 agencies and antennas in FRANCE and of many establishments in foreign country.

Since about thirty years, APAVE is engaged in many missions on the five continents which led it to intervene in more than one third of the countries registered in ONU among which:

North America: The United States.
South America: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Guyana.

Asia: China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam.

Europe: Spain, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia.

The Middle East: United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Syria.

Africa: Algeria, Angola, Benign, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Equatorial, Island Maurice, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, Chad, Togo, Tunisia, Zaire, Zambia and 27 countries of the Common Market of the East Africa and Central Africa.

The APAVESUDEUROPE is made up of 4 direction areas:
- Area 1: South-west (Bordeaux)
- Area 2: South-east (Marseilles)
- Area 3: East-Center (Lyon)
- Area 4: Products and developments (Lyon)

APAVESUDEUROPE is made up of 64 sites in France, Reunion and New Caledonia

Study and optimisation networks services

To carry out its operations, the data processing department has procedures related to specific interventions. These procedures are consulted in case of doubts of a technician on the manner of carry out operations. However, with the number growing of operations to manage, it became necessary to clarify the processes related to the interventions.

Objectives to be reached:
- To be able to estimate the time of an operation
- To communicate this estimation to the applicant
- To receive correctly formulated requests
- To have all the documents under the hand to carry out the intervention
- To warn the applicant of the good course of operation.

To be able to achieve this goal, I’ve studied the service called Sync Center, in order to analyse all the processes carried out in an internal and external way. The analyses of an update realised by Sync have allowed to improve this service and to be used as model for others networks service, in an organisational way.

Sync Center is software which permits to copy files, repertories or even a hard drive on Novell server. This software is based on a scheduled task system, synchronization generally taking place the night, to not saturate the network the day.

At the end of this study I’ve made different documents to improve the service in a step quality way like a request for update procedure, a form of request, and a dashboard

Interventions Management

The interventions management is the part which comes to supplement the monitoring network. The monitoring allows managing the machine in real time whereas the intervention management allow having an historic for each machine we want to supervise.

The aim is to make possible to have different statistics to know the reliability of the machines in order to know what type of material falls frequently broken down . Moreover, the system will manage the working time of the technicians.

In the first part we have worked on the study of the needs and to its integration in environment which already exists.

Secondly we have indexed the different type of interventions which can be done.

To finish we have study the statistics we want to have and we have written a schedule of conditions in order that the programmers of the company can develop software.

Plan of addressing IP

We have written another schedule of conditions to manage IP addresses of the network. The aim is to have software which permits to respect a plan of addressing IP. The software will be consulted each time a technician need a static IP address for a machine.

At the present time, the APAVE does not profit from any control as regards addressing IP except of addresses allocated by DHCP.

Thanks to this new software, the new map of IP addresses thus made up will be coherent and reflect a model beforehand decided.

The first step of this work was the study of the IP addresses employed on the different networks of the company.

The second step was the realisation of the schedule of conditions, containing all rules we want the software respect and technical information about algorithms the software should to employ.

Network monitoring

The other part of my training period was the study of SNMP (Simple Network Protocol), which is used by the monitoring network software. The first part of my work has consisted to use monitoring software of the company called “Novell Remote Manager”.

The test of this application revealed that this software did not match with the need of the network cell but have allowed me to discover the monitoring domain.

In order to know SNMP and to propose an alternative solution to commercial products the cell network wanted to buy, I have study SNMP in an open source environment. This research reveals that it is very important to know the protocol before using monitoring software. Indeed, some technical problems have to be resolved manually like installation of a MIB owner. This research is based on a practical application to complete theoretical chapters.

The research is composed of technical chapters and practical examples to learn how SNMP does work and at the end of the study I have made a small software using SNMP in a graphical environment.

The research confirms that an open-source based software can be a good solution, in integrating the machines to be supervised progressively in the software and to deal with the problems individually.

Conclusion

The realization of this training period enabled me to understand many things on the organisational and functional level of a network service of a company and the need to adopt a step quality to manage human and material resources as well as possible.

All the fields approached throughout this memory have many common points and we can realise that the next step could be a step of unification of the tools. The need for gathering the elements on the same dashboard on a service scale could be considered on a all service scale.

We can imagine a principal dashboard which could be the monitoring software, gathering other dashboards specifics to each service of the network cell.

To conclude, my training period carried out at APAVE was very enriching on many points. My reception in the data processing department was very good and enabled me to carry out this training course in a very pleasant atmosphere while having an important autonomy in my work.

These 6 months of training courses have enabled me to approach functional concepts like the step quality as well as technical concepts like the network monitoring. These two concepts are very important in the pallet of competences that a network engineer must have.
