to go shopping est une expression
she went shopping est bien un prétérit.
(to go, I went, gone)
le prétérit progressif se construit avec l'auxiliaire être = she was shopping.

pardon, ma phrase n'est pas claire...it's just about the aunt who used to live in ....or was living in....during the author's childhood.
