Bonjour,

J'ai quelqu'un qui ne comprend pas trop une phrase et j'ai du mal à l'aider ... voici la phrase :

"And she began to think that it was a bookless society didn't stand a show in this modern world , not a damn show ."


Déjà je me demande s'il ne manque pas un mot après "society", et puis je ne suis pas sûr du sens du mot "show" car je n'ai pas le contexte ... avec un "that" après "society", je dirais "et elle commenca à penser que c'était une société ignare/peu évoluée qui ne supportait pas le moindre spectacle (?) dans ce monde moderne, pas le moindre foutu spectacle". Mais comme je n'ai pas le contexte, je trouve ça un peu bizarre ...

Quelqu'un peu m'aider ?

C'est un usage que je n'ai jamais vu, mais dans le "Oxford English Dictionary", on dit:
" c. (Now only U.S., Austral., and N.Z.) An opportunity for displaying or exerting oneself; a chance, ‘opening’. Phr. to give (a person) a show; to have or stand a (or no) show. Const. for, to (do something). "

En Anglais standard (?), on dit "stand a chance". Je ne sais pas un expression correspondent en français, mais peut-etre ca peut aider un peu? Dans contexte je veux dire "...qui est destinée a l'échec." ou quelquechose comme ca.

Il y a sans doubte quelquechose qui manque dans la phrase après "society", et je suis en agreement que c'est probablement "that".

Sorry, I've made a terrible mistake with the subject of the sentence, should be "a bookless society', not "books', that is unpopular. Thus, the meaning should be: A bookless society can't stand the test of time, can't put up a show in this modern world.
