Can anyone stp confirm whether the following statements are correct:

Note:the plus-que parfait may be used to indicate anteriority
in relation to some point in the past which is
sometimes stated and sometimes understood:
par exemple :

j'avais déjà mangé quand tu es arrivé

it may also used in contrast to
the passe' compose' to emphasize the fact
that one is referring to "the distant past :

par example :
j'ai perdu le stylo que tu m,avais donne'

Question:

If the above Note Correct ,then when
the plus-que parfait tense is used by
itself in a sentence ,the implication is
that the event :

( is in the past distant past )

or:


( Would have occured in the past )

It sounds correct to me

EDIT: Seems I misunderstood the question. It seemed to me that both options were right, but you want either or. I'd say the first one then: "is in the distant past"

Once again I need to ask :D Is the "that or that" thing an exercise in a book or is it something you create yourself to formulate a rule? The reason I ask this is because the rules are too simple sometimes.

To me sounds that the event "is in the past distant past" as you proposed.
Though the plus-que-parfait when used in a sentence may refer to another action referred in a previous or following sentence. I have no idea how it could be used really really isolated out of any context.

"Occurred subsequent to another past event " is the best definition to me, though the previous one is not wrong

"Subsequent" suggère"after," alors que plus-que-parfait suggère "before." Si j'ai raison, l'action au passé composé "occured subsequent to the action" au plus-que-parfait. Ça me semble bien.
