Salut:
Note: the perfect infinitive is formed by using the inifinitive of the auxilary verb (avoir or être) and the past participle of the verb : Example: avoir chante' , être revenu it is used to indicate "anteriority" in relation to the conjugated verb, the agreement of the past participle follows the usual rules: il regrette d,avoir achete' cette voiture Elle est heureuse d,être venue vous voir. The perfect infinitive must be used after the preposition (après) après être rentrés du cinéma ,ils ont dîné Question : According to the above (Note ) is the following Statement Correct: when the perfect past infinitive is used ,it indicates that its action (occured before ) the action of the main (conjugated ) verb. Thanks a lot Guys ... ![]() Last edited by versatchi; 03-27-2006 at 03:41 PM. |

Only thing in that sentence that might look wrong is that you call it "perfect past infinitive" when it is called "perfect infinitive" in the rest of the text. Does it matter?
![]() EDIT: I thought a little more about this line "The perfect infinitive must be used after the preposition (après)" Does this mean that the perfect infinitive only exists after aprés, or that when there is aprés, it has to be used? If the first then I might have come up with an example that goes against your statement (not sure though). What about this? Je voulais seulement être vu comme une personne bien. What do you think? Isn't the action "voulais" prior to "être vu" in time? Last edited by Franco le Suedois; 03-27-2006 at 06:32 PM. |

In the specific case I presented (if it is a valid one), I believe the only option that would match would be that it occurs at the same time as the conjugated verb. Though this cannot be seen as a general rule since in your first example "Elle est heureuse d'être venue vous voir.", the perfect infinitive's action obviously occured before that of the main action.
I need more comments on the sentence I propose before I can give you a good answer. I'm not even sure if it's a valid perfect infinitive construction yet. What do you think? EDIT: Does all this make any sense to you? It's quite complicated :P Last edited by Franco le Suedois; 03-27-2006 at 07:44 PM. |

Salut:
I am not a 100 % sure also But I will give More Example : il regrette d,avoir acheté cette voiture Cette voiture , je regrette de l,avoir achetée Elle est heureuse d,être venue vous voir Elles se souviennent de s,être promenées dans ce parc pendant leur enfance So according to the above examples : when the perfect past infinitive is used ,it indicates that its action (occured before) the action of the main (conjugated ) verb. Can you Confirm Svp warmest ,regards versatchi ![]() |
