Bonjour,
Je dois traiter le sujet suivant : " Why did you choose to study biology ?
Merci bcp d'avance !

Biology is the study of life, is a very broad science that can be studied at any level, from the micro-level, looking at the structure of cells, to the macro, looking at whole plant and animal communities and their relationship with the environment. It’s fascinating because it covers a huge variety of organisms, and uncovers the secrets behind the millions of intricate processes that take place in our world day to day.

It underpins rapidly developing new technologies, such as working out the human genetic code or finding out what causes grave disease. The great discoveries made in biology throughout the years have granted amazing technological advances. Pharmaceutical companies now have the ability to manufacture insulin cheaply using transformed bacteria, giving new hope to diabetic patients. Biology has enabled us to understand heredity and the inheritance of genetic abnormalities that cause disease. Inherited diseases, once thought incurable, may someday be cured through gene therapy. In addition to solving human problems, biology helps us to understand our environment and learn how to care for it. It also forms the basis of the study of ecology and the impact we are having on the Earth. New disease resistant crops are being developed to reduce the need for pesticides and increase productivity, without upsetting the balance of the ecosystem.

It is more particularly this last aspect which urged me to study the biology. Indeed, more than by the cellular biology or the neuroanatomy - which are nevertheless domains very interesting – it’s above all the vegetable biology, the ecology and all the subjects while relating to the environment which attracts me.
The biological sciences are now at the forefront of science, as it is becoming more urgent that we understand our impact on the natural environment and on other organisms which share that environment with us, and the advances of molecular technologies have placed powerful tools at the disposal of biologists.
Overpopulation, the destruction of the environment, and the malaise of the inner cities cannot be solved by technological advances, nor by literature or history, but by measures that are based on an understanding of the biological roots of these problems.

I shall like, later, working on the environmental problems which are more and more numerous, regrettably, and someone of an alarming gravity.
At the moment where the industrial activity ceaselessly gains ground and presents a real threat on our environment, I think that will be needed, in the years to come, more and more biologists to find solutions of these topical questions such as the management of waste, the rising sea levels due to the greenhouse effect...
It thus is in perspective to work later on a durable development concept and of respect for the environment that I have chooses to make of the biology.

I already have, during my spare time, participated in numerous operations for the flora protection in nature reserve or in a program of study and protection of the seals of the Baie de Somme... These some experiences were only strengthening my desire to continue this way.
Saving threatened species, studying the ozone layer, growing organic plants without pesticide … the 21st Century offers many challenges to a biologist. It is a subject that will never be fully understood as it continues to grow and develop. Therefore, there is always more knowledge to be found and discovered. New knowledge in areas such as genetics, molecular biology, the environment and marine science have effects on human society and the environment all over the planet.
Life is fascinating, beautiful, and complex, and biology is truly the science of life; that’s why I choose to study her.
