Bonjour !
Observe the layout of the text. What do you notice? What sort of document is it ? 2. What information do you get from the title? B) SCAN THROUGH THE NEXT 1. List the characters mentioned in this extract. 2. Who do the following pronouns refer to: "I" (l.5); "he" (l.18); "she"(l.22); "it" (l.33)? 3. List the things Adrian will never do. Look for the changes he is ready to make in his behaviour. Classify them and conclude on Adrian's main concerns. C) WORK WHITH WORDS 1. Using the context, find what each word is (adjective, adverb, verb) and guess its meaning. bank holiday (l.2); RSPCA (l.18); bathcubes (l.23); rotten (l.28); tangled (l.35); banned (l.42); barked (l.42); swear-word (l.44) 2. Match the traslation with the words used in the text. pochette; entendre; bouton; ne pas cesser de; manque de; content C) READ BETWEEN THE LINES 1. Study Adrian's resolutions, classify them in 3 categories and find a title for each one. Why has Adrian decided to make these changes in his life ? Justify whith exanples from the text. 2. Describe the contrast between Adrian's behaviour and the behaviour of his parents. 3. Who does "I" refer to?Why? But who really writes the story? What is the effect of this on the narration? 4.What is the general tone of this extract? How does the author manage to create this atmosphere? Find examples. 5. Why does Adrian say: "I will be glad to get back to school"?Does this surprise you ? E) BEYOND THE TEXT Do you think it is fair to publish a person's diary ? Why or why not ? F) PUT PEN TO PAPER Write your own diary about your first day back at school after the Christmas holidays. Explain your resolutions. Try to imitate Sue Townsend's style. Voici le texte: THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE Thursday January 1st BANK HOLIDAY IN ENGLAND, IRELAND, SCOTLAND AND WALES These are my New Year's resolutions: 1. I will help the blind across the road. 2. I will hang my trousers up. 3. I will put the sleeves back on my records. 4. I will not start smoking. 5. I will stop squeezing my spots. 6. I will be kind to the dog. 7. I will help the poor and ignorant. 8. After hearing the disgusting noises from downstairs last night, I have also vowed never to drink alcohol. My father got the dog drunk on cherry brandy at the party last night. If the RSPCA hear about it he could get done. Eight days have gone by since Christmas Day but my mother still hasn't worn the green lurex apron I bought her for Christmas! She will get bathcubes next year. Just my luck, I've got a spot on my chin for the first day of the New Year! Friday January 2nd BANK HOLIDAY IN SCOTLAND, FULL MOON I felt rotten today. It's my mother's fault for singing "My Way" at two o'clock in the morning at the top of the stairs. Just my luck to have a mother like her. There is a chance my parents could be alcoholics. Next year I could be in a children's home. The dog got its own back on my father. It jumped up and knocked down his model ship, then ran into the garden with the rigging tangled in its feet. My father kept saying "tree months' work down the drain", over and over again. The spot on my chin is getting bigger. It's my mother's fault for not knowing about vitamins. Sturday, January 3rd I shall go mad through lack of sleep ! My father has banned the dog from the house so it barked outside my window all night. Just my luck ! My father shouted a swear-word at it.If he's not careful he will get done by the police for obscene language. I think the spot is a boil. Just my luck to have it where everybody can see it. I pointed out to my mother that I hadn't had vitamin C today. She said, "Go and buy an orange, then". This is typical. She still hasn't worn the lurex apron. I will be glad to get back to school. Merci d'avance ![]() |
