Introduction


Student in DBS, in fist year, I do a trainee during tree months for improve ma English knowledge.
My placement was in Finland, in Tampere. I have started it 10th January and finish 24th march. This placement it was in a library a university, in TAMPERE University of Technology ( TUT ).

I will present you TAMPERE University of technology. What program they propose, what diploma they propose, the relation with international school and what I made in this placement.

Secondly, I will expose to you, what I learned during this trainee and what difficulty I have encountered.

The third part will be consecrate to my placement research for the next placement student.

For the last part, I conclude on this placement.





Part I. Presentation of my placement


TAMPERE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY :

Tampere University of Technology is a governmental organisation specialises in the technical education of Masters of Science in architecture and in engineering and Doctor of technology or philosophy.

The services of Tampere University of Technology are teaching students and give national diploma. It's a second largest of engineering science in Finland. In campus he has around 12000 students, 2000 workers with around 280 teachers.

Tampere University of Technology was creating in 1965. In this university he has 13 departments.

- Sandvik Tamrock and IHA
- Reima-Tutta and the Institute of Electronics

The bigger competitor to TUT is Helsinki University of Technology. This University proposes approximately the same program, but it’s situated in capital of Finland, It’s most prestigious.

He has more competitors for the library. The first is all national library, but he have an other competitor, it is internet, because lot of students have internet connection and not use library computers. But the library proposes a big quantity of E-journal. It is news paper, but it is virtual new paper. For read this E-journal it's free in library. And, he has a same system with E-books.

In TUT library he have around 6000 customers per years, But in this university he have lot of free access point around 250 computers and around 16000 customers registered. These customers are students, teachers, and other people to live near TUT and give library card.


My placement :

For my trainee, I don't has a special mission, this trainee it was in a library, and my tutor just want, I increase my English skills and know the Finnish life and Finnish city.

During this trainee I had one obligation. As I like the computers, and I know repair some problem. My job was to check free access computers in university. Around 250 computers. If the computer was locked or had small problem I repair, but if it's big problem I righting this problem on a special paper and give this paper to the computer scientist office.

This job during all morning and for afternoon, I spoke with other peoples and I went in some business course. I went in this course with ERASMUS students. The name of this course is "Management of organisation and leadership". I went eight hours in 3 times, in this course and I had made one homework assignment with 3 other international students.


International relation :

This university cooperates with 170 schools all over the world, 130 of which are in European Union countries. In 2003, about 450 international exchange students at in university, and propose eight programs in English.

TUT offers international study programmes in English in :

- Architecture
- Information technology
- Biomedical engineering
- Materials science
- Industrial engendering
- Management
- Environmental engendering
- Biotechnology



Part II. My impression


When I arrived in Finland, I was afraid to speak in English. Because I haven’t a good level in English and I haven’t lot of vocabulary. This trainee in Finland, it was a very good for me, for increase my English knowledge.

The first day, I arrived in my apartment with my student tutor and he presents me my new roommate. They are Indians and they just spoke in English. For me this it was a good opportunity, but for the first time, I haven’t spoke lot of because, I was afraid.

For me the first week, it was very difficult but after this week, I have taken more assurance in me. After, I have spoken more with my roommate, and in my placement in library.

This placement for me, it was allowed to learn much on me and on Finnish culture and of course in English. During my trainee, I was speaking every time in English. I had increase my English skill every day, and after 3 weeks, I was thinking in English every time, because before, I thought in French and translated in English but today I think directly in English.

Secondly I went in some course of “Management of organisation and leadership” and today I know a Finnish course technique. The Finnish method for study is not same to French method. The big part of the course concerning to read some part of book and explain what we have understanding. After this, the teachers explain, why he has chosen this article and how make it, in real situation. After we done some exercises.


Part III. Placement research


For this part I spoke with my tuto,r for contact a famous Finnish company.
It is NOKIA. My tutors know a teacher to have a very good place in this company.
But it is very hard to contact NOKIA. These companies accept just a meeting group to TAMPERE University of Technology and the next meeting was in April.

But I was in a meeting in university. This meeting was in February, for all students, and for a summer work. But, I went in this meeting for spoke with people to work in this company.
I have spoken with four company :

- Nokia
- Siemens
- SiSuDiesel
- Solita

It was difficult to interest this people, because they gone in this meeting for propose a summer job and I had information on this meeting, the same day when I gone, for this reason I went in this meeting but I haven’t information on DBS.

Firstly I have spoken with people to work for NOKIA. Nokia it is a company to build an electronics product for example they build a sell phone. I have spoken with three people. But they don’t want give to me an information for contact directly a good services. They just give the internet website address.

For Siemens is not exactly a same problem. It’s a very small subsidiary company, they have just forty five worker and the manager explained me it is not possible to accept a placement in this small company. This company builds an electronics product to.

SiSuDiesel is a big company to build diesel engines. I have spoken with a Director of Human Resources. She explained me he have a possibility but it was note possible for her to spoke with me for this, because he had lot of students and she don’t had a time. But she gave me a card for send more information to DBS and to this placement.
The last and the most interested for DBS was SOLITA. Solita’s business areas include business intelligence, product development partnerships, and customer-specific solutions in software products and software development services. The project manager was very interesting by DBS. She had given me a personal card for sent more information on DBS. She spoke with me long time because she wants lot of information on DBS. I have given a card to mister DUVIER and explained the situation.


Conclusion


My three months in Finland were for me an experiment very enriching. I think, I improved my level in English and today I know Finland country and Finnish people. This characteristic of DBS is more which enabled me to learn English more quickly than I never had done it. That even allowed me to know my roommate, two Indian people. It is a very good experience.

Trere are more competitors concerning the library. The difference is that library proposes a big quantity of E-journal : virtual free news paper which can be consulted and read in the library. These news papers are the same of E-books.

The TUT library has around 6000 customers per years (16000 are registered). A lot of free access points (around 250 computers) is available for students, teachers and other people livig near TUT and getting the library card.

Week after week, i took more assurance with my english level and i spoke easier with my roommate and in my placement in library.

To me, this placement allowed to learn much on me and on Finnish culture and of course in English. During my trainee, I always spoke là, je ne sais pas quel temps serait mieux, le tien "was speaking" ou preterit car c'est terminé... in English, so I increased my English skill every day. After 3 weeks, I always thought même remarque que la précédente phrase in English, because before, my mistake was to thought in French and to translate it in English.
