Default Translation of "I can relate" !

Salam,

I'm looking for the translation of the expression "to be able to relate to something a situation for instance"

Ex: I can relate to your story

I think I heard someone say before "je m'y connaît". Is it true? what's the proper translation?

Thanks in advance!

Even if the two expressions are about knowledge I would not say they are equivalents. "I can relate to this situation" means you have been in this situation yourself so you know how it feels. I know how I would say that in French but since there are French people on this forum I think it's better for you to get the translation from them.

السلام Fatmagul,

En ce jour de commémoration du débarquement en Provence des armées américaines, britanniques et françaises (de métropole et d'Afrique) que la paix soit avec toi.

1/ Je m'y connais :

s'y connaître en <> (être habile, expert) know all about
to be an expert in
to be well acquainted with
to be knowledgeable about

exemple : Le Chef Paul Bocuse s'y connaît en cuisine.
Chef Paul Bocuse knows all about cooking / cuisine.

L’expression “je m’y connais” n’est pas très littéraire, elle appartient plutôt à la langue parlée.

2/ To be able to relate to something a situation for instance (to establish association - between two or more things - or -of something- to have relation or reference)

Pouvoir établir un lien avec quelque chose, une situation
Pouvoir établir un lien entre ce qui se rapporte à quelque chose, une situation
Etre en mesure de se situer par rapport à quelque chose, une situation

3/ I can relate to your story (to form a sympathetic or significant relationship with other people, things)

Je peux m'identifier à votre histoire
Je comprends très bien ce que représente votre histoire

Patrock
