Default I agree

Oh, yes...that's true...It's better to say nothing at all, than to say something meaningless...

really nice that some of languages have the same proverbs.in turkish ,we have a proverb has the same meaning as yours.

it is:söz gümüşse ,sukut altındır..

I heard this proverb when i was in middle school, we used to speak about a proverb every monday (i remember that i had course at 8.00 am :D ) so the teacher told us that its a japanese proverb but who really know?
the arabic version is : إذا كان الكلام من فضة فالسكوت من ذهب
it sound like "ida kana lkalam min fidda fa sokut min dahab "

I have more favourite proverbs:

English:

1. Never say never again!
2. It is never to late! (means more for love)
3. It is too good, to be true!
4. Where there is a will, there is a way!

German:

1. Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei!
2. Die Luege hat kurze Beine!
3. Aller guten Dinge sind drei!
4. Alte Liebe roestet nicht! (stimmt)

I like most Spanish proverb: MEJOR TARDE QUE NUNCA!

What I find interesting is that for every proverb that expresses a truth about human behaviour, there is another one that says the opposite:

Many hands make light work.
Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Out of sight, out of mind.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Which just proves that human behaviour cannot be reduced to simple maxims.
