Wordorigin.org gives 7 or 8 stories about its possible origin. None seems to be it.
Here are just a few: _ French coquetier _ French coquetel, "a drink known in the Bordeaux region for several centuries. The drink, and its name, were introduced to America by French officers during the American Revolution." _ so called because it is a drink that will cock your tail. .......etc... I kept the best one for the end :D (sorry for the nearly double posting, but maybe you missed it in "International Cuisine" or whatever it's called ). Just in time for Thanksgiving , just use a turkey instead of a rooster."... derived from cock-ale, a drink popular in England in the 17th and 18th centuries. To a cask of new ale was added a sack containing an old rooster, mashed to a pulp, raisins, mace, and cloves, and the mixture was allowed to infuse for a week or so." Please, tell me this is not true !!! . ... it is true "Lest you think that was just an example of The Funny Stuff People Did A Long Time Ago, people actually still make this stuff. Boston Beer Co. recently whipped up some cock-ale from a recipe from Compleat Housewife (a British cookbook from 1736), out of 12 gallons of beer, "one large and elderly cockerel," raisins, mace and cloves. According to Koch, the founder of Boston Beer Co., the beer was a great success. "People loved the idea (after they got over a little shock) and were surprised at how tasty it was," he claimed. I'm sure. Given the coffee-, maple-, and hazelnut-flavored beers that crowd our shelves, can poultry-flavored beer be far behind? " |
