Hi
There are several sites which list the toast used for drinking in various different languages, but they are all missing some important ones (esp. Arabic, Urdu [اردو] and Hindi [हिन्दी] in their original alphabets). It is one of the most sociable uses of a word, so would love it if anyone can help add to the list, in any and every language possible. Could you give original spelling in original alphabet and transliteration into IPA or the latin alphabet. english - cheers afrikaans - gesondheid shqip (Albanian) - gëzuar Беларускі (Belorussian) - за здароуе (zuh zduh-ROW-yeh) bosanski (Bosnian) - na zdravlje breton - yec'hed mat Български (Bulgarian) - наздраве (na zdrave) Catalŕ (Catalan) - Salut 普通话 (Chinese) - 干杯 (gahn bay) hrvatski (Croatian) - u zdravlje / nazdravlje Česky (Czech) - Na zdraví dansk (Danish) / norsk (Norwegian) / svenska (Swedish) - skĺl Nederlands (Dutch) - proost eesti (Estonian) - terviseks suomi (Finnish) - kippis français (French) - Santé Frysk (West Frisian) - tsjoch Friisk (North Frisian) - sünhäid Deutsch (German) - prosit Ελληνικά (Greek) - Γειά μας (yah mass) Hawai`i (Hawaiian) - Ola עברית (Hebrew) - לחיים (le chaim) magyar (Hungarian) - egészségedre íslenska (Icelandic) - skál bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian) - selamat minum Gaeilge/Gŕidhlig (Irish/Scot Gaelic) - sláinte italiano - salute / cin cin 日本語 (Japanese) - 乾杯 (kampai) 한국어 (Korean) - 건배 (gun beh) Latina - salutem Lietuvikai (Lithuanian) - į sveikatą Il-lingwa maltija (Maltese) - saħħa polski (Polish) - Na zdrowie portuguęs (Portugese) - ŕ vossa româneşte (Romanian) - Noroc Русский (Russian) - За здоровье (za zdorov'e) српски (Serbian) - живели (zhivelee) slovenský (Slovak) - Na zdravie slovensko (Slovene) - na zdravje castellano (Spanish) - salud Tagalog - Mabuhay Tamizh (Tamil) - poriyal Andhra Bhasha (Telugu) - Kakarakaaya vepudu українська (Ukrainian) - за кохання (za ko-KHAN-nyah) Cymraeg (Welsh) - iechyd da ייִדיש (Yiddish) - לחיים (luh khime) Sources: http://www.biography.ms/Common_phras...languages.html http://home.worldonline.dk/mortenl/cheers.html http://www.omniglot.com/writing/index.htm Any more translations or any corrections would be greatly appreciated (translation in original alphabet and transliteration into IPA or the latin alphabet would be excellent). Cheers! ![]() Last edited by severecci; 05-09-2005 at 11:57 PM. |
