Hi, I am Sonja, from Cardiff in Wales, UK. Was passing through this forum while tracing family roots - my grandad is from the Ukraine (K'vov). If there are any Ukranians out there who have heard of the surname Kuibida, please let me know!

Hi Sonja, welcome to the forum! I think you meant your grandpa was from L'viv (or L'vov in Russian)? Anyway, yes, I heard of such surname. It is written Куйбіда in Ukrainian. This is a typical Ukrainian cossack surname, it includes the words "куй" (forge [verb]) + "біда" (trouble [noun]), probably meaning a person who is a bad blacksmith or a person who has forged (made) trouble :-) Most Ukrainian cossack surnames were created in a similar funny way: Непийвода (Drink-not-water), Підкуймуха (Shoe-the-fly), Перебийніс (Break-the-nose) etc.
