And I guess TRANSLATION should be separate from simply a language. But I cannot give myself a solid theory.
The road to mastering a (foreign) language can be more than one, and I believe translation comes before really conquering a language. I dream to train young translators/interpretors in every languages despite their ignorance of the culture, linguistics or even bit of this language, Then the translators would be trained as a machine and work as machine, not bearing so much burden of a language, its nation and people, and anything of its culture. |

I guess that even if you speak a foreing language, it's not that easy to try to translate.. Are you attempting to adopt a new theory?? What about translatiing without a little background og the TL culture? I don't think that it sounds that easy too. Personnaly, I believe that to be able to be an efficient and good translator, you need besides mastering a foreing language, to know about its culture, poeple and nations! |

I agree with Asminha, I feel at ease translating from and to english because I have a good understanding of the anglo-american culture, of which words/expressions will better appeal to readers of the texts I translate. But I've studied Russian for almost 10 years and have never been able to get into the Russian frame of mind, to really think as they do; for this reason I don't feel comfortable translating from Russian (even though I know the words). That's one good thing about translation, I am very confident that machines will never be as good as human beings :D

That's exactly my point :-)
Machines can never replace human beings, just try one of those online web sites that give automatic and instant translations; they really suck!! They just place words side by side pretending to offer a good sentence. And when it comes to slangs, you can't get any benifit of them. |

I said of a possibility!
I don't recognize french, spanish, portugese or romanian or italian words good, even I cannot speak them. But with help of dicctionary I can translate text of them into direct english or my chinese. So I want to train younger translator not interpreter to copy or sense a language, just recognize the source language and do real convertion, may called translation, into a target language by any means of help. |

Well well well..You say that a simple dictionary might be of a great help, I don't deny that when it's a matter of words!! But when you have a text, a dictinary can give you a hand, but the work is all yours!
I don't know if you get my point! What I am saying is that if you don't speak a language, and try to translate a text with a dictionary, it won't really make sense. You said that you don't speak French but you can tranlate into it, or from it! Then give it a shut and let us see what it gives!
