And don't forget that over half the vocabulary of English derives ultimately from Latin, even though English is not a direct descendant like French or Portuguese.

Yes, of course! Shall we continue?

Does anybody here speak Etruscan or Sumerian?

Just curious if these languages have made a similar impact as was done by Latin.

I think Latin was the only language that became dead and influenced others?

Etruscan is not decyphered yet, just like lineary A.

Actually, there are lots of "dead" languages : once you get into the matter, you'll never get out of it. I had classes about this at my school : it's very interesting !

When I was at the high school I've been hating the Latin for three years...then I started a Spanish course and the magic happened :D Still I don't love Latin as the "living" languages, but I recognize it's useful to be learned and teached in the schools...in Italy we have 5 years of Latin in the high school (unless for technical schools) it's a good "palestra mentis", exceptional for the logic, and not at all died...like the dinosaurs...they've become birds

I hated Latin, but just because I don't like to fail and this language made me feel with my back against the wall and about being stabbed by failure.

This is the only dead language I have studied, thank to this knowledge now it's easier for me to understand how to use declensions in other languages.

I'm not sure, because I have never been in Germanic or Russian lessons, but this languages use declensions too...

Sometimes I like to know where words come from(I use to study it at school, in Spanish), some of them come from Greek, some others from Latin even from Arab...

Etruscan and Sumerian... I just know this cultures by their art. May be it's because I'm Spanish that I know more about Latin that I do with other dead languages... but I think each of this languages are important in other modern languages evolution.
