Pluiepoco,

Black colour is used just to position Chinese against Russians (They are white, you know). Of course, Chinese are not black.

And of course, I agree that we have to face reality now, but thing is our reality is different from yours, we live in deserts, steppes, semi-deserts and semi-steppes, that naturally don't support, how shall I put it, planting wheat, rice, and any grain or vegetables. It's easier and much cheaper to raise cattle, horses, sheep, goats and then eat them.

See, if we had such two big rivers like you have with huge floodplanes we could probably switch to settling in towns. But we don't have big rivers, we have small ones which dry out in summer, except these two Dariyas which flow into the Aral Sea. On these Dariyas we have had older civilizations living same way as any floodplain civilization does.

But actually to settle and farm in desert you have to have very huge oil reserves or some huge income generation that will bring a lot of money so that you could invest this money into farming in high salinity desert sands or steppes. Just like Saudis and Emiratees do. Believe me, man, farming in desert is like digging a well with a needle.

But you should also notice that speaking of good names for nations China is called Kitai in Russian. This is from Turkic word Qitay. In Chinese you would call your own country Zhungguo, right? Correct me if I am wrong.

Hungarian people call themselves Magyars, where these different names come from? In Russian Hungaria is called Vengriya (Âåíãðèÿ)...

Egypt is called Misr by the natives...

It's very interesting that people create so many words for describing certain one country.

The situation with xenophobia is really hard in Russia, so there are quite many words to describe others races:

÷óðêè [čurki] - all people from middle east (arabs) or asian ex-soviet countries, gypsies. (in Serbian another slavic language this is a good word ment simply Turkish people)

õà÷è [hači] - term reffered to the people from the Caucasus

÷åðíîæîïûé [černožopyj] (means "black-assed") - afro-american or simply black man, or the most popular word and it s not considered to be offensive is íèããåð [nigger].

êîñîãëàçûé [kosoglazyj] (means squint-eyed) - for asian people (Chinese, Koreans, Viethnamese and so on)

ïèíäîñû [pindosy] - westerners (Europeans and Americans)

æèä [žid] - jew, but this is a bad word, though in Polish it has the same meaning but seems to be neutral. Neutral Russian word is åâðåé [jevrej]

Äîáðûé âå÷åð!
When I served in the Soviet Army long time ago (of course, now it's a secret!!!), we also had special words for Belorussians (Bulbashi - áóëüáàøè) and Ukrainians (Hohly - õîõëû).
I think the origin of these I can't explain.
I notice also that the Russian language is very rich on these things..... as well
