It is very interesting to read all your different opinions about this subject! Everybody has his own opinion and that is great. And in my opinion it is the same with the languages in the whole world. There have to be different language because each language has its own culture and a lot more. The same language all over the whole world would mean that all countries would not differ very much. But there is also an other aspect. We have to communicate with other countries. And my own opinion is that it is working. There are so many people who speak English, French... I think everything should develop in the way it is going at the moment.
If there is something wrong about my opinion, tell me! Jan |

I see Papa`s and Salim`s side, but in my opinion, learning different languages is like entering in an unknow field which causes pleasure, amazement , hard work and make people feel really together. I mean... it is practical to use English only, of course, but it is neither my language, nor yours. It is so cold...The good side in speaking different ones, is that I try to learn and speak your language and then I come closer to you as a friend, and vice versa.

I don't know why some people find it boring to speak the same language, and compare it to how boring it is to eat the same food and wear the same clothes. they're totally diffent things, speaking one language can solve many miscommunication problems and bring the world much closer, while eating the same food is of course boring and doesn't solve anything.
And saying that having a world with many languages is fun, I would say it might be fun but doesn't help at all, speaking in a puzzeling language might sound fun to a person but the other person doesn't benefit from it. cultures & Identities are not going to be lost if you speak one language. and differentiating ourselves shouldn't be in languages, languages differences are just like borders while there shouldn't be any. you can differenciate yourself in things other than communication.

If we speak only "English" then do we speak American English, British English, Australian English...
I HATE to say it but there are two languages that would serve much better for a "universal" language. One is Spanish because of the amount of people that speak it and the other is Korean because of it's ease to learn and it's formality. The downfall of english is the slang, which is most definately NOT universal. As a for-instance... a "fag" in England is a cigarette. In America it is a homosexual. |

for me I was basicly talking about the concept of speaking a universal language, when people agree first to speak a universal language then choosing which one is another challenge, if not creating another one to satisfy all parties :P speaking english spanish or any other language is not the issue now, people still don't agree that speaking one language would be very helpful ...

Dear Papa,
Afghanistani, is there such language as Afganistani I wonder? Last time our teacher told us there were two languages Dari and Pashto there. But of course, I agree with Papa. Languages will always make things more complicated, will create barriers and so on. But think of the life without any barriers, including this one? |
