American Automobile Dictionary from FREELANG
Great, that's something I need .... and I still need. You get what you pay for, and what you get here is so awful that it is laughable. I figured it out midway trough letter "C".When I see so may words that I know to be wrong - I cannot trust anything in there, as I am not able to rely on the acuracy of those I don't know. [NO, it's not "better than nothing", and "it's free, so don't complain"]. What I see too are a lot of typos and/or mispelling: this tells me that the author does not really care. Good start - the first expression is wrong:__ NOT "4-wheel [IT'S 4-wheel drive]= tout terrain, voiture tout terrain"[by the way, "4-wheelers" is what truckers call cars] __ NOT "car for self-drive hire = voiture sans chauffeur": I cannot even figure out what it is in French? does it mean a "rental car" ? ["American Automobile" - not "British"] In the States, you rent a car , or, you hire a car with a chauffeur: remember that "chauffeur" does not mean driver - it means somebody paid to drive. __ NOT "carrefour = intersection" sure, it is in the dictionary. That's about the only place you will see that word in everyday language [I'd like to see the look on my neighbour's face if I ask him: "how far to the next carrefour ?" :D ] __ NOT "change of oil [IT'S oil change] = vidange" Technically correct: but, you get an oil change; shops advertise "$19.95 oil change" __ ? ? "control gear = levier de commande"? ? ? ? so vague, I cannot even guess.__ NOT "diprod [IT'S dipstick: for oil & other fluids] = jauge de niveau d'huile" I lied :D - it was so funny, I read more: .... and it got worse: blow-out flat ; truckshop ; steep gradient.... AND .... licence plat , speding , reigstration In case you wonder: my husband used to be a mechanic, and I ran these words by him, just to be sure. He enjoyed very much the "panel-beater" , nearly as much as the "overhead valva" [when "valve" & "vulva" breed ] Sorry if I sound like I am in a foul mood, but I just spent time downloading something I hoped was useful, and I find it's pure junk. As a result, I now don't feel like checking other dictionaries on the freelang site. What else is available then? Not a dictionary, but a good serious glossary. Downloadable a page at a time - if you have time. DICTIONARY OF AUTOMOTIVE TERMS "Search for the meaning of over 15,000 expressions for automobiles, bicycles, motorcycles, engines, and boats." This one is much shorter: Motorcycle Glossary CRANKY, me :D ??? as in CRANK - very important word, was absent from that dictionary - Yes, that's what I am today. |
