No sooner said than done, Mike!
Abstract : To commemorate its 50th anniversary, META announces an international colloquium and invites all researchers and workers who wish to present unpublished works focusing on the problem of proactive translation science. In the last half century, translation markets have changed; and at the same time, translation is now approached in a theoretical and scientific manner. A pioneer in journals specializing in the science of translation, META has consistently maintained its high publication standards, mainly owing to its far-sighted vision of the developments, both practical and theoretical, associated with the world of translation, interpretation, and terminology. Therefore, its own history reflects in part those of the profession and the discipline. Thus this fiftieth anniversary could not only provide the opportunity for an assessment, but also the chance to address the future. While translation science has acquired a definite autonomy, the exponentially increasing demands of linguistic markets have created new needs. To what point do the universities satisfy these needs? Of all of the numerous examples of theoretical and quality research, does any of it focus on the teaching and the practical aspect of translation? On the other hand, can this research be applied? This gap that has been criticized many times is still there. If it seeks to bridge this gap, a proactive translation science needs to work towards the future, to anticipate the needs. It is active upstream in order to become action downstream. Even if it does not make a major impact, it aims at the very least for a resonance in the linguistic fields. But there is more, because beyond the expectations and connotations of management, proactivity also evokes involvement, activism, even subversion. This colloquium invites all contributions addressing the proactive dimensions of translation science from the following angles: Interdisciplinary : translation science is often defined by its interdisciplinary nature. Should we seek to unify the diverse schisms traversing the field, or on the contrary, should we encourage different approaches as sources of potential enrichment? How can we promote the diffusion of research within the interconnected disciplines? Education : the educational context evolves through novel approaches and methods as well as through social changes that affect successive generations of students. How can we rethink teaching strategies and curriculum content? How should we apply new technology? Cultural and political : any activity involving reasoning and discussion implies an involvement in society. Can or should translation science and terminology isolate themselves? If not, what forms should this involvement take? Terminology : Terminology is changing. What are the theoretical limits to the study of specialized language, which claims to follow the scientific method? What role is played by the new approaches proposed in the last few years, such as those of a social cognitive, communicative, or textual nature, and social terminology? Technology : whether they are tools or text support, new technologies are part of the picture. What impact does research in these fields have on the translation profession? Do they meet the true needs of language professionals? What are the perspectives? The working languages of the colloquium will be French, English and Spanish, but simultaneous interpretation services will not be provided. Proposals of topics to be discussed of around 250 words will be accepted until December 1, 2004, attached as a Word file, and sent to the following e-mail address: meta@umontreal.ca They should contain the name, affiliation, and address of the author, as well as the language of the presentation, and any audiovisual materials required. The program committee will inform interested parties of its final selection no later than January 20, 2005. META will ensure the publication of the results of the colloquium. |
