Hi Mulitilingual , we say marhaba in Arabic , well, the turkish Merhaba is derived from the Arabic marhaba This word is said to the visitor when he comes to your home, so you are telling him , you are welocme with easiness. Marhaban bek , and it is derived from the word ( rahb ) which means wideness, and easiness. ![]() |

Hey Salim,
very interesting topic, I think that this all happened when in the past, the Arabic Nation was very strong and was the nation of science and trading and that’s is why the other languages used words from Arabic and then these words became part of these other languages, it's the same for English these days I guess. Thank u Salim

Yes you're right, Arabic was the language of science in the meditteranean, and other nations would send students to the Arabic schools, so many new scientific words in Arabic were used by students who studied in Arabic country in the 8-14 centuries ...
Also when Muslims conquered other places they left a strong influence of language and religion.

Salam aleykum,
I agree with you that the impact of Arabic language was great, it is still felt, but also Arabic language absorbed some Turkic words too like Ombashi, commander of the ten soldiers, it's like sergeants in some Arab countries' armies. I think it comes from On = 10 (corruption Om), bashi = means head in Turkic or Turkish. In Arabic 10 - different word ashara, right?? Lots of other military words, commands etc. I just looked into the dictionary But I agree that Arabic is classic no doubt about that. And merhaba is of Arabic origin, yes. It's true. |
