Hehe. French is said to be a hard language to learn. It was very easy for me to learn English too. Then, Spanish is quite easy too (for the moment, i've not been studying it for a while).

Well, part of the answer is that you're referring to American English. In England we call it aubergine not eggplant - it took me ages to discover what eggplant was (tho it's egg shaped). Also we don't have 'hamburgers' for the reason you give...they are filled usually with beef so we call them beefburgers (except in American fast food chains). We do have muffins -they are traditional, but not the sweet cakes American's eat. I think boxing rings were originally round & the name stuck when the shape changed. When there's a fire the flames burn up...but the house does burn down...to a pile of ashes & in England we fill a form in. We park in drives but don't drive in parks. As for the rest - like anomalies in other languages - it's to do with origins & the way the language developed

Lol it is true. But I know about "hamburgers" - hamburger is a sandwich made based in different countries.
1 . the name "hamburger "comes from the town Hamburg in Germany. 2. the idea of chopping meat into very small pieces comes from Turkey. 3. the pickled cucumber comes from Eastern Europe, it is popular in Poland and Russia. 4. the word "ketchup"- comes from China - "" Ke-tsiap" - is the Chinese name for sauce made of pickled fish and spices. The 1st recipe for tomato ketchup is in a 1792 American cookbook. 5. mayonnaise comes from the Spanish island Minorca but its name is French ![]() 6. the bun comes from an English recipe and the sesame seeds on the top of the bun come from the Middle East. lol lol Very interesting isn`t it? The main American meal is not American !!!Last edited by Nana_Brazil; 06-17-2005 at 05:47 PM. |

Sure...we're all international. Origins of words are very interesting. English 'marmalade' was invented in France - it's a French name, though it's traditionally made with Spanish Seville oranges. 'Pyjamas' for those who wear them are Indian in origin & 'bungalow' -English for for a one storey house, is an Indian word. The sandwich was invented by the Earl of Sandwich who found it convenient to make a lunch he could carry with him when he went hunting by putting his slices of meat less messy when placed between slices of bread.

I don't think English is crazy and I don't think the poem of Shakespeare is beautiful. The poem of Shakespeare can not compare with Chinese Tang poem. Chinese Tang poem is the most beautiful poem of the world

Hello Tiyz. I like Tang poems too...they're from the golden age of Chinese poetry & they are ancient & very beautiful. It's a shame that I can't read them in the language they were first written in. I like Japanese haiku too. It's very difficult to say though that one culture or country produces more beautiful words or poetry than another. Every country has its great writers & poets. The writing of Shakespeare is very different from the Tang style but that doesn't mean that his words don't also have much beauty & wisdom.
