" Vous " can use to speak of many " you", when someone speaks to several persons, for example he'll say that they are three, he'll say " Vous êtes trois ".
You can use " Vous " as a polite way to speak to your manager, your teacher, or someone ( adults, for more of the times) you don't know before: sister's boyfriend, a seller....or anybody else. Before the 50's I think, some parents used to say "Vous " to their children and to their family, and children did the same; but now, there's no many family that do this. For example, your boss we'll say you he's about to sack he'll say " Vous êtes renvoyé ! " or " Vous êtes viré !", but the last one is quite rude.
