Smile Why is 'A Streetcar Named Desire' called like this?

Hi,

I have always wondered why A Streetcar named desire is called like this. In Spanish it was translated as Un tranvía llamado deseo which means the streetcar was called 'desire'. Is this the same in English ?
I mean, was there a place in New Orleans called 'Desire'? Does it mean that the streetcar's direction was Desire? When a streetcar's direction is X, can you say this streetcar is named X ?
So much questions, but I am really curious !

Thank you so much !

I heard that there really was such a streetcar in New Orleans, but I think that there is also a deeper meaning of this title: it's connected with the complicated relationship beetween Stanley and Blanhe...

Because it is Desire (both the feeling and the name of the steetcar) that leads Blanche to Stanley.
