Well, if you want American food/desserts, I can give some recommendations.
Barbecue: this varies greatly from region to region, but is always tasty. There is an apple barbecue sauce commercially available here in Maine to which I am rather addicted. Bison: I greatly prefer this to beef, and it NEVER has antibiotics or hormones added. Turkey: when cooked right, this is well worth the fuss. Chicken pot pie: one of my all-time favorite foods. Best done with a biscuit crust, but some make it with puff pastry. If the only vegetables are peas and carrots, they're doing it wrong. Hot dogs: grilled. With toasted buns. Ketchup, mustard and pickle relish, not that scary red crap. Chili if you must, but it's best to stick to the basics. Red snappers are a New England delicacy. Pancakes/waffles with REAL maple syrup: it has to be the real stuff. I'm spoiled; my mother has a deal going with the local store allowing them to tap her trees in exchange for a couple of free bottles of the good stuff. There's no beating it. Desserts- Red Velvet Cake: some benighted people put chocolate or cream cheese frosting on this. Shun them. Spearmint is best. Wacky cake: I grew up eating this as a regular dessert. The recipe has scared some off (a chocolate cake that uses vinegar?) but ignore the wimps. Ben & Jerry's ice cream: proof that there is a God. Apple crisp: yum. Apple pandowdy: I made this for a few parties; it always vanished first. I don't know why it's so obscure, because it's fairly easy to make and super-tasty. Chocolate chip cookies: further proof that there is a God. Especially if eaten just out of the oven. I have other favorites, too, but they are not specifically American. My mother's cardamom bread, for example, is a Scandinavian recipe; there is a sizable Finnish community in Maine, and the town of New Sweden wasn't called that just because it sounded pretty. |
