The word tattoo comes from the Polynesian word tatau, which actually means to tap repeatedly and that's what the artist does in a bamboo tattoo. The bamboo tattoo is an old way of tattooing with sharpened bamboo. Nathaniel Delaney had a bamboo tattoo made in Thailand and was pleased with the work and the result of it. Applying a tattoo (to someone or something) means to hit the ball hard, as if to figuratively leave a tattoo on the ball. A tattoo is also a nautical term meaning a signal played five minutes before taps (lights out).

The term "8 ball" is also slang both for +1/8 oz. of cocaine or crystal meth, and for a bottle of Olde English 800 malt liquor. Marilyn Manson has got an 8-ball tattoo. I don't know if he is a coke user but I hope he isn't.
