Hi,
I'm in the process of starting a new job translating Japanese Manga, and we'll be discussing the terms of contract and salary soon. The only thing is, I've never really done a translating job before, so I'm not exactly sure as to what I should expect/push for as a descent salary. My Japanese ability aside, I'm still in college, and have no official Japanese proficiency certification, etc. However, I can just as easily start any Japanese/English related job (ie: Teaching, Tutoring, or Conversation Partner) for at least 2000-3000 yen/hr (roughly $20-30/hr), and those usually don't require as much proficiency in Japanese. Also, this job has me doing most of the editing and proof work. It's basically a one man job. I was initially quoted 20,000 yen/novel (roughly less than $200) by a friend who introduced me to this job, but my first go at things seem to be taking me around 20 hours per novel. I'm sure that will speed up as I gain more experience, but with that system, it would fall quite a bit under par to around 1000 yen/hr. I did some quick research online and found that translators can make around $40,000 to $50,000 a year. A Japanese to English specific job I found was offering over $5,000 a month. This would of course be a professional salary, which I... haven't quite gotten that far yet. Anyways, my question is, if anyone has any input as to what a translator like myself should expect to be paid, I would greatly appreciate it Thanks! |

Why dont you imagine a perpage payment, you find out the average words/page, you look how much it would take to you to translate it correctly, and how much you want for it, and you multiply by the number of pages
