Hi everybody,
I need to check two Hungarian expressions "piri neni" and "marci bacsi". I found they may be proper names followed by words denoting familial relationships: aunt and uncle, respectively. Are they rather formal (like, e.g., Aunt Margaret) or not (like Auntie Maggie)? Last edited by tole; 12-21-2005 at 12:57 PM. |

Hi:
Like you say, these translate as "auntie Piri" and "uncle Marci." They are very informal - the names are in a shortened (familiar) form, and the expressions 'auntie' and 'uncle' might be used in a neighborly way to denote people who aren't literally related to the speaker, like family friends, the lady at the greengrocers' on the corner, etc. a Last edited by adpads; 02-06-2006 at 10:56 PM. |
