Hey there...my name's KH and I am trying to learn romanian. Anyone know of any good text or website to get me started?

Here is some basic Romanian:

A. Informal language:
Talking to children & teenagers, friends - De vorbă cu copii şi adolescenţi, prieteni/amici:

tu” is the pronoun used when addressing to children & teenagers, friends (informal). “Tu” is pronounced as in the English word “two”.

Short conversations:
English:

S: - Hello, my name is Silviu! What’s your name?
A: - Hi! My name’s Ana. Pleased to meet you!

Romanian:

S: - Salut (Bună)! Pe mine mă cheamă Silviu. (Eu mă numesc Silviu.) Pe tine cum te cheamă?
A: - Salut! Pe mine mă cheamă Ana. Mă bucur să te cunosc. / Încântată de cunoştinţă.

E:
S: - Hi, Cristina! How are you?
C: - Hi, Silviu! I’m fine! And you, how are you?

R:
A: - Salut, Cristina! Ce mai faci? / Cum îţi merge? / Eşti bine?
C : - Salut, Alex ! Bine, ce să fac ? Dar tu, ce mai faci ?

B. Formal language: When addressing to an adult, either to an elder member of the family or to a stranger, “dumneavoastră” is used instead of “tu”:
Cum vă numiţi?


De unde sunteţi?
  • The verb will have a different form, too. Just compare:
Cum te numeşti? (informal) ←→ Cum vă numiţi? (formal) (What’s your name?)


De unde eşti ? De unde sunteţi ? (Where are you from?)
  • Some usual phrases - Câteva fraze uzuale:
Hello!/Hi! - Salut! Servus! Bună! (familiar)
Please! - Vă rog! (formal) / Te rog! (informal)
Thank you! - Mulţumesc!
Good morning! - Bună dimineaţa!
Good afternoon! - Bună ziua!
Good evening! - Bună seara!
Good night! - Noapte bună
Good bye! - La revedere
Have a nice day! - O zi plăcută
Please! - Vă rog! (formal) / Te rog! (informal)
Thank you! - Mulţumesc!
Bless you (when someone sneezes) - Noroc! / Sănătate! / Doamne-ajută !
Good bless you! - Dumnezeu să te binecuvînteze!
I need help! - Am nevoie de ajutor!
I don't understand Romanian. - Nu înţeleg româna.
I don't speak Romanian. - Nu vorbesc româneşte. / Nu vorbesc româna.
My name is ... - Numele meu este ..., (Eu) mă numesc ...
I am called … - Pe mine mă cheamă …, Mie-mi zice…
What are you called? / What’s your name? - Cum te cheamă? / Pe tine cum te cheamă?
Pleased (Nice) to meet you! - Mă bucur să te cunosc! Încântat/-ă de cunoştinţă.
How are you? - Ce mai faci? Cum îţi merge?
I am fine, thank you! - Eu sunt bine, mulţumesc!
And you? - Dar tu? / Şi tu?
How old are you? - Câţi ani ai? (informal) / Ce vârstă/etate aveţi ? (formal)
I am 14. - Eu am 14 (paisprezece) ani.
And you, how old are you? - Dar tu câţi ani ai?
I am 12. - Eu am 12 (doisprezece) ani!
Where are you from? - De unde eşti?


I am from Romania/USA/France/China/Japan... - Eu sunt din România/SUA/Franţa/China/Japonia...
  • I am:
Romanian: Sunt român. (m.) / Sunt româncă. (f.)

American - american (m.), americancă (f.)
French - francez (m.), franţuzoaică (f.)
Chinese - chinez (m.), chinezoaică (f.)
Japanese - japonez (nipon), japoneză (niponă)


  • Nationalitaty - Naţionalitate :
What’s your nationality? - De ce naţionalitate eşti? / Care este naţionalitatea ta ?



What nationality do you belong to? - Cărei naţionalităţi aparţii?
  • Citizenship - Cetăţenie:
What’s your citizenship ? - Ce cetăţenie ai?

American/French/Chinese/Japanese/Romanian citizenship - cetăţenie americană / franceză / chineză / japoneză (niponă)
Where do you live? - Unde trăieşti? În ce ţară?
Where do you live? - Unde locuieşti ? Unde stai?
I live in the USA. - Trăiesc în SUA (= Statele Unite ale Americii).


I live in Paris. - Trăiesc la Paris. / Locuiesc în Paris. / Stau în Paris.
  • Mother tongue & foreign languages - Limba maternă & limbi străine
What’s your mother tongue? - Care este limba ta maternă? (informal)

What languages do you speak? - Ce limbi vorbeşti?
How many languages can you speak? - Câte limbi cunoşti? / Câte limbi ştii să vorbeşti?
I can speak English, Romanian, French, German, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Russian, etc. - Vorbesc engleza, româna, franceza, germana, chineza, italiana, spaniola, rusa etc.
