For long I was looking why in words and names from greek origin where "F" exists ( or Φ in the greek alphabet "fi" )are translitterated in the other European languages with PH . Example the word alPHabet ot the name PHaestos ..........
they are both written in modern greek with Φ or "fi" and not with ΠΧ or "PH" One of the ideas I have about this is that it could be of Phoenician influence as in this older alphabed they have no letter for "F" . Similarly in greek they have no letter for "B" and they write it with "MP" - μπ .Please if there is someone knowing the answer and a specialist in this field to give an explanation . Thank you in advance . He could answer me also on my e-mail incon@in.gr . By the way such transliteration is being made only in Latin influenced and west European languages as it does not exsist in the slavic languages using Cyrillic letters...........
