I want to know somethings:
Where are you come from? Have the dialects of your language been protected via legislation in your country? Have the regional cultures of your country been protected via legislation? I come from Shanghai,China. The Wu language(the local language of Shanghai)is my mother language. It is a dialect of Chinese.but our government has not done anything to preserve our regional cultures and dialects. They said that dialects aren't important for China, and wu must speak the Madarin(the offical language of china and the local language of Beijing)in society and school.Speaking Wu is forbidden. So many children can't speak the Wu language and they can only speak Mandarin now. What I am worried about is the dying out of Wu language. Can you give me some suggestion what I should do? Last edited by Tiyz; 09-10-2007 at 06:35 AM. |

More or less the same thing happened in France in the last half of the XIXth century : the governments decided that French was the only language to be spoken in the country and, for example, children were severely punished at school if they spoke the local dialect. Yet regional languages resisted, even if they were now spoken by much fewer people. Nowadays, they're freely taught, sometimes even in public schools and, though there aren't many people that currently speak them, their number slightly increases each year.

i think it is bad to forbid people to speak it is own language...in Egypt i think we dont have this problem as most of egyptian communities speak arabic but with different accents .....but we have nubi community which has it is own languge not arabic ...i think they can speak this languge with each other but the formal language is the arabic ..my opinion is that every people has the riht to talk they language but the whole state must have its formal language ..the language of majority of its people

They don't know what they are doing... I think every one of us should speak with the language which is the most suitable for him/her. I just don't get it... Why somebody does not want others to speak with a dialect. I think it's weird and just unjustified...
