Yes Slath is perfectly right but, in France, more than only regional accents depending on the place people come from, there are also some regional saying
Which I have experienced because, for example, my mother is from Tourraine (very center of the France) but i have always lived in Paris... so I speak like a parisian... with some sayings from Tourraine, and my friends make fun of that (They often don't know the sayings even if they do understand them)

And by the way, french spoken by the parisian use to be THE reference because Paris is the biggest city and the capial of France, but it has an accent and specific sayings, the very true reference would rather be the Tourraine, around the Loire valley, for historical reasons.

As I am not a native of a French-speaking country, I have often found that Belgian French can be much easier to understand than French. I think it would be an excellent idea to learn French in Brussels.

Personnaly, I live in Belgium and in a part of our Country (Wallonia), we speak French, exactly the same french we use in France !
Just about Brussel, most people speak french, but a part speak Dutch !
Some of my friends come in Belgium and they learn French, I don't think there are problems with that !

hi i spent 25 years in belgium and visited canada switzerland and french african speeking coutries and let me tell you there are too countries the people speek the most right french is belgium and switzerland.
you can verrify this by visiting different french websites in belgium france and others french speeking countries. good luck.

Thanks a lot for all your replies. I'm now seeking a school for learning french in Brussel or around there and wish that I could go there by this year.

In my case, I have a degree on Business Administration in hong kong (in British system), 5 year working experience and plan to spend 1 year on learning french. After that, I may continue my post graduate study in either belgium or france about International Relations, European Studies or Europe-China Studies, but... if je parle francais mal, I may just quit and go to UK or Hong kong to continue the study.

Do you think there's any preparatory language course for students who want to study university in french speaking countries? Are there any recognized certificate for this?

Hi,

I am a new member and I wonder if any one knows where to obtain info on study in Belgium? I've done some research and unfortunately most of the info I found is all about study French in France. Is there a web site that lists all of the institutions that offer French language programs in Belgium?
