Garpster is an unknown character at this point

SIZE=2]Boy, I am so glad that English is my native tongue because with its many roots and influences it could appear to have no rules at all! But Spanish - now there's a language with rules that get followed! Well, mostly.
I wonder who can help me with this.... In Spanish, son-in-law is "yerno". So "daughter-in-law" is "yerna"? Nope, it's "nuera"! Hmmmmm. The plurals are yernas and nueras, except if they of mixed sexes, so for "my son-in-law & my daughter-in-law" turns out to be "hijos politicos"! Get OUT! My Spanish-speaking friends don't know, so can anyone here tell me how such a disparity came about? TIA The Garpster [/size] |
