Yes, I know that Jackson had to cut many episods but I'm simply not agree with decission about Tom Bombadil's cutting.

The episod of Tom Bombadil isn't long and has something special, something very optimistic in the world created by Tolkien. Smth warm and unusual. All this world is unusual, I know, but the place of Bombadil is like some oasis, harbour.. calm and integrity in the world full of war - war.. c'est ca.. If Jackson cut a few minutes of battles' scenes, there would be place for Bombadil and Goldberry

about 570 minutes of the film.. and no place for Bombadil? Pas tres grave je crois: si 570 si 600

Maybe he isn't essential maybe he is - difficult to say. But he is somebody special, the oldest person in the Middle-Earth, he isn't under the influence of the ring..
I don't know LOTR well but when I saw the film, one of my first things was:
hey, smth wrong.. where is Tom Bombadil.. ?

Hey dol! merry dol! ring a dong dillo!
Ring a dong! hop along! fal lal the willow!
Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!

I never thought of it that way, before, Alice. That's probably the best argument I've ever heard in favour of Tom Bombadil (native, learned Englishmen included). Thanks for the insight.
The first time I read Tom Bombadil's section in the book, I found it a bit tedious. I mean all those "ho ho merry dol"'s begin to get to you after awhile.
But, when reading FOTR for the second and third time, I began to recognize Tom for what he is: a beautiful character.
I agree with you, and think he should have been (at least) in the extended version.

Now, onto the next argument! Arwen vs. Glorfindel (vs. Legolas if you've seen the animated version...I suggest you don't

)

Ce dialogue m'interesse vivement. Il y a un Francais (?) qui n'a jamais entendu parler de cet ouvrage de Tolkien, et une Polonaise qui semble le connaitre tres bien. Je voudrais savoir dans quelle mesure LOTR est connu et apprecie au-dela du monde anglophone... Il me sembe que ce genre de roman fantaisiste est essentiellement anglais (ou plutot britannique) et se traduirait plutot mal en francais ou allemand ou italien...
Vous savez sans doute que Peter Jackson est neo-zelandais et que les 3 films ont ete realises dans mon pays...

En France metropolitaine LOTR est très connu et apprécié je crois... c'est moi qui suis une exception et certainement un peu inculte quand il s'agit des choses de l'ère moderne

Même s'il est probable que comme tous les films il perd beaucoup à être traduit

Pour ce qui est de l'Allemagne et de l'Italie je ne sais pas mais on doit pouvoir s'attendre au même engoument qu'en France.

But unfortunately even if someone doesn't agree with Jackson, he hasn't lot of possibilities to change anything

We have the trilogy done and we can choose only if watch it or no. I think that everybody who knows LOTR would have his own version of things - how they are should be shown. I watch these films with pleasure - meme si sans Bombadil

Yes MikeL, I know that the film was shooting in your country and I find it very beautiful

In Poland there are many of LOTR's enthusiasts. I think they often read it in oryginal version to know how was it written at first. They're also studying the elves' language and many many things.. You can for example watch this forum - even if in Polish, just for variete
