Default Hello, bonjour, Guten Tag

Hi everyone,

My (screen) name is Catachrest. I'm a proud Canadian musician, linguist-in-training and office worker. My native language is English but I have studied French and German to some degree of partial fluency; I have a smattering of Latin and Greek, and a few words here or there in other languages. My latest challenge is Irish Gaelic as I'm trying to learn to sing in it. Who designed that spelling system?!

Hm, what should I say about myself? I sing and play flute, pennywhistle, and piano at an amateur level. I work as a clerk and, though my studies are currently in limbo while I work off some of my student loans, I study linguistics.

Anyway, it's good to be here, and I'm looking forward to meeting others and hopefully making a contribution here.

Catachrest

Hi Catachrest
Welcome on the forums

That's nice to see such a presentation! people usually say hello and nothing more
We'll be glad if you can help us to improve the quality of translations around here as it seems you can speak many languages. As for Gaelic we sometimes have a member or two who come around and try to help with this language, but it is not much used so far. Hope this will change in a soon future though.

Talk to you soon

The first thing I noticed too is how well this presentation is written Not all newbies do the same.

We hope then to see you making contributions here as you want. I am sure many forums will interest you.

And oyu know what? We even have a musical forum

Hi !

With so many languages known, you're really welcome here ! I can add that it isn't so common to meet another person who knows Latin and Greek !

As for Irish Gaelic, I sympathize with all my heart : I'm trying to learn Breton when I have a little time ( i.e. not every often, unfortunately... ) : it's really hard and when I come upon Irish Gaelic, I don't understand anything...! I can't even pronounce it...!

Hey Lina,

Thanks for the welcome! As I said, I have only a little bit of Latin and (Ancient) Greek, but I'll help where I can.

Wow, Breton! I've never had an opportunity to look at the language, really. I love what I've heard of Breton music and have been learning a few sets of dance tunes. You might find Welsh easier to relate to Breton than Irish or Scots Gaelic, as it is more closely related. It's similar to how German speakers have an easier time deciphering Dutch than Swedish or Norwegian.

Yes, I know they're close for they belong to the same linguistic branche. I like Celtic music too ! When I come to Brittany on holidays, I often go and dance at what we call "festou noz", i.e. night fair in the open. Are you playing in a band ( in Breton, a "bagad" ) ?
