In a town of just over 400 people... how many copies of these books could there possibly be?

Norwood, Colorado parents recently burned copies of Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima after having them pulled from the area high school's curriculum. Millie Davis, of the National Council of Teachers of English, said "I'm flabbergasted that something like this would be happening in this day and age". The Hispanic coming-of-age story is commonly included as part of high school curriculums, and won the Premio Quinto Sol national Chicano literary award. The novel explores some minority religious views such as paganism.

The Colorado parents who burned the copies claim they "mainly" object to some profanity in the novel. Rudolfo Anaya, a professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico, said "The book should be judged in its entirety. There is some strong language in strong situations, but there is no flippant use of profanity."

from my point of view, its chocking, where ever it is, it reminds some dark times of history... and shows that some people, have difficulties to argue with words

Thumbs down

Burning books isn't decent. Whatever is written, it's not because paper burns that you gotta burn books. If you don't like a book just don't keep on reading it or give it to someone who would love it. Burning a book means burning the work of a man/woman and is, as I said it before, not decent.

Though the burning of books, regardless of the content, is a repulsive deed, you have to see humor in the irony of it. These are the same Christian fundamentalists that you see on TV and in the news, wanting to have intelligent design as a science unit taught in school. Intelligent design by the way is at best pseudo-science and at worst ontological propaganda. They argue that: "Having it taught alongside evolution would be better since it gives another perspective and opens the minds of the students to other opinions". You see the Irony? with Intelligent design (religious propaganda) they act as if they are free spirits open to new horizons of knowledge, yet with a simple novel that deals with common issues of adolescence, in this case paganism imagery, they treat it as an evil scourge that should snuffed out, lest it will corrupt the impressionable minds of youth. LOL
