Introduction
Devanagari (देवनागरी) or Nagari is the most common script of India. It is a syllabary script. Devanagari is used for writing Hindi, Nepali and Marathi and is now the most common script for Sanskrit. Each symbols represents a syllable. The short a (pronounced as English u in but, between French e muet and short a) is inherent in every symbol. So is न na and not n. To write n you have to put a stroke under the symbol न् . This stroke is called विरामः virāma. All Indian and South-Asian and South-East-Asian (Thai,Cambodian, Tibetan etc.) scripts have the same writing system. Just the shape of the characters / symbols are different. In the future there will be also lessons to write Tamil. These lessons I made myself in a book to learn Sanksrit for Dutch-speakers. Lesson 1. ग ga - ग् g - न na - न् n म ma - म् m - भ bha - भ् bh . Write the left part first. Write downwards. The topline at the end. The rule is: from left to right and downwards. Practise every day. Pronounciation of bha is like ba but aspirated (with a h sound) Exercise 1a. Read and transliterate in Roman (These are real Sanskrit words). ग । म । भ । भननम् । नग । नमनम् । गगनम् । भगम् । मम । भग । गम् । भन् । मग । नभ । गमनम् । नम । भम् । भननम् । । is a stop, like . or , in European languages. Exercise 1b. Write in Nagari. mama bhaga bha ma ga nama gaganam namanam naga bhananam gam bham nabha gamanam maga bhan bhagam The Answers in the next lesson.

The key to exercise 1a.
ga, ma, bha, bhananam, naga, namanam, gaganam, bhagam, mama, bhaga, gam, bhan, maga, nabha, gamanam, nama, bham, bhananam. 1.b मम, भग, भ, म, ग, नम, गगनम् , नमनम् , नग, भननम् , गम् , भम् , नभ, गमनम् , मग, भन् , भगम् . Lesson 2 Here we have two new symbols. ta → त , la → ल In these lessons I don’t follow the alphabetical order, but I put symbols of similar shape together. Pronounciation of t (ta) is dental, like the French t. This is important because we have also an retroflex t. To write long a (a in father) we put a vertical stroke after the symbol. So mā is मा . We know म (ma) , मा (mā), म् (m), In the same manner we can make: त (ta), ता (tā), त् (t). and ग (ga), गा (gā), ग् (g), ल (la), ला ( lā), ल् (l), न (na), ना (nā) , न् (n) Exercise 2a. Reading exercise. तात । लता । भाम । तान । तत् । नामन् । भना । ललनम् । लाभ । लाभालाभ । नाना । नमभतल । तनम् । लता । तालम् । नत । मलम् । नाम । तलम् । गत । गता । गानम् । नाग । Exercise 2b. Write in Nagari script gata, gatā, nāma, tālam, bhalam, lalanā, bhalam, bhāga, tāma, tāla, laganam, lālā, nānānam, mālā.

The new consonants with vowels. Note the place of the u in the r. र रा रु र् । स सा सु स् । श शा शु श् । Visarga (विसर्ग) A Visarga is a colon (deux-points) after a symbol.
