I would like to ask what character encoding should i use with firefox in order to see the kanji characters instead of ????????

Hi,

The character encodings for Japanese are generally UTF-8, Shift_JIS, ISO-2022-JP, or EUC-JP. Setting Autodetect to Japanese will get Firefox to automatically choose the right encoding most of the time.
Character encodings are of no use without an appropriate language pack though, so if fiddling with the encodings doesn't work, you need to install one. Please see "Displaying and Inputting Japanese Text" on my Japanese page for instructions: Teegzworld - Japanese

Succinct phrases are tough, so it is a bit beyond me, but I'm sure it won't be long before Frequency or Suzu get chance to take a look...

Uh, you mean 'kage' like from Naruto?
I guess it'd be:
伝説の影
densetsu no kage
"Legendary shadow(s)"
