![]() Please help. I am looking at getting a tattoo and was wanting to get the following japanese proverb "adversity is the foundation of virtue" in Japanese script. I have had a translation from a japanese friend but due to her spending too much time in Australia she is concerned it might not be perfect. Can anyone help Thanks |

Thanks Bakanagaizin
Yeah i really want a direct translation of "Adversity is the foudation of virtue" as its meant to be a well known Japanese proverb. I cant seem to find it in Romaji so Im finding it difficult to get it written in script form. |

Hi,
Well I found a version of the proverb "Adversity is the foundation of virtue" on this website (Japanese Proverb Dictionary | Language Realm -- 5th from bottom) I don't know how genuine it can be said to be, but it does seem to have the meaning you're after (although I'm not a native speaker, so I'd recommend getting it checked by a native before committing it to ink). 困難は徳の基 konnan wa toku no moto(i) ('motoi' is an archaic reading of 基 to mean 'foundation'; today I think it would just be read 'moto') |
