Meridionalis has been suggested for southern. Is the person on to something?

A university can be universitas or universitas studiorum to avoid disambiguity (totality). It is true that meridionalis can be rendered as "southern" but I think australis is more common so my proposal for Southern University is Universitas Australis.
You can look for Latin names of other universities here - they are in "vulgo" (ordinary language) too:
Nomina universitatum Latina decreto adoptata - Vicipaedia

Thanks for your response. How do you say it in classical Latin? Also, do you know where I could find a Latin pronunciation utility on the Web?

Quote: How do you say it in classical Latin?
As the universities were founded in the 12th-14th centuries and classical times were in approximately 100 BC to 100 AD the word for university must be the one they used in the Middle Ages, namely universitas. During the Antiquity there were not any universities like the ones we have now. In fact the word universitas first meant trade- or craft "guild", i.e. the medieval trade union. In the 12th century teachers in Paris organized themselves in a guild they called universitas magistrorum. (Magister is the Latin word for teacher.) In 1210 they moved to "la rive gauche". I guess you know that Quartier Latin (the Latin quarter) is on the left side of the river Seine. Well these magistri were the start of that.

If you want a classical word there is schola but it just means school. You also have academia (academy) from Greek Akademeia but this was the school where Plato taught, the first institutional school of philosophy so that word does not exactly describe our modern universities.

Maybe I have misunderstood your question and you only want to know how to pronounce Universitas Australis. If so, r is trilled, s is voiceless, t has the sound of t as in tired, the Romans always pronounced double consonants as two separate consonants and so on but I think I had better go to your next question: do you know where I could find a Latin pronunciation utility on the Web?

The only way to learn the right pronunciation of a word in any language is to listen to it and say it yourself so I recommend Weelock's Latin pronunciation website:

Thanks a lot for the helpful info. How would you translate southern academy in classical Latin. Academia australis? It doesn't have to be a faithful translation or anyting--just one that is linguistically and gramatically correct.

Your translation is correct. Academia is a feminine noun but the adjective australis belongs to the third declension and the masculine and feminine are always identical for those adjectives.

By the way, the abbreviation CFA found in my first link wasn't explained in "vulgo". It's short for Civitates Foederatae Americae, Latin for United States of America.
