Hi all!
It's been too long since my latin schooling (back in high school many moons ago). I'm looking for the meaning of pax and pacis translated separately. I useually see peace translated as pax pacis, but I get confused when I see just pax or pacis used separately. Any clarity would be "peaceful". Thanks, Musicman |

"Pax" is the nominative and "pacis" the genitive.
So the word is presented "pax, pacis, f." in the dictionnary, for it always gives the nominative and genitive of every noun, but it doesn't mean that "pax pacis" is one single expression to say "peace". The genitive is only given to help for the declension. So "pax" and "pacis" both mean "peace", but they aren't the same case.

Thanks, Lina.
I'll hit you with one more question. Help me remember a little more of my correct Latin use. So, as a guy, if I put a poster on my wall with the word "Pacis", how far off am I? Are are the cool Latin scholars like you going to be laughing at me as you walk on by? Thanks, Musicman |

Actually, you have to write "pax" on your poster, for, if it is an isolated word ( i.e. not in a sentence or phrase ), you only need to put the nominative.
And I would definitively no laugh at you ! Latin is quite difficult for people who didin't learn it...!

just pax is the right answer.
pax = peace pacis = of peace Latin pronunciation is easy. You pronounce every letter in a word just like it is written. The vowel in pax is pronounced like the one in club. tranquillitas = tranquility harmonia = harmony |
