In which case the hatched chick from the egg (of the creature that was almost, but not quite, a chicken) would have had the same genetic make-up as its parents, and would not have been a chicken.
I think this question is better phrased as, "which came first, the bird or the egg?" Indeed, we may ask it about any egg-laying creature, e.g. reptiles, amphibians, fish, turtles, tortoises.
While we are on this topic, we could ask which came first, the baby human or the adult human?
In my opinion it would have to be an adult human which came first because baby humans are so helpless and rely on the care of their mother for several years.
We can only speculate. Do we believe that all living things on this planet just came into being by themselves or do we believe in a creator?
