Basically malignant mesothelioma is a form of cancer that spreads along the lining of the lungs, heart and/or abdomen. Wherever the cancer develops, a different set of language, treatments and procedures apply. That is, the names of the instruments and procedures used to diagnose pleural mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining) are somewhat different from the instruments and procedures used to diagnose mesothelioma of the heart or abdomen lining.
The 3 main types are Pleural Mesothelioma, Peritoneal Mesothelioma, Pericardial Mesothelioma.
Pleural is also known as cancer of the lung lining.
Peritoneal is also known as cancer of the peritoneum or abdomen lining and Pericardial is also known as cancer of the heart lining.
