pre school education
4 different types of structures exist for children between 3 months and 5 years old (4 years old in Northern Irland): children day care centers (until 4/5 years old) pre shool groups or play groups (2.5 to 4/5 years old), infant schools (3 to 4/5 years old) and classes for reception in primary school (England and Wales only, since 4 yo). Governement is developping education for young children thanks to public funds, in cooperation with voluntary private business. In England and Wales, infant schools structures are free of charge for every child of 4 whose parents are requesting. Reception of 3 years old children is currently left to LEAs , but the aim is to offer in 2004 a free pre scholarship to children aged 3.
In Northern Irlande, governement initatives are offering a pre scholar year for any child whose parents requested it.
