C'est un usage que je n'ai jamais vu, mais dans le "Oxford English Dictionary", on dit:
" c. (Now only U.S., Austral., and N.Z.) An opportunity for displaying or exerting oneself; a chance, ‘opening’. Phr. to give (a person) a show; to have or stand a (or no) show. Const. for, to (do something). "
En Anglais standard (?), on dit "stand a chance". Je ne sais pas un expression correspondent en français, mais peut-etre ca peut aider un peu? Dans contexte je veux dire "...qui est destinée a l'échec." ou quelquechose comme ca.
Il y a sans doubte quelquechose qui manque dans la phrase après "society", et je suis en agreement que c'est probablement "that".
