I am not sure either that the question "does God exist ?" is the one to ask, for it actually hides struggles for power. You have the ones who believe and the ones who don't and you won't change this with any argument. To ask this question implies that you already have an answer, because the ones who believe won't ask it ; so if you are among them, it's just a rhetorical question and if you aren't, it reveals that you don't believe. And if it isn't a real question, it means that the only thing you want is to persuade someone that your opinion is the right one, which is meaningless, since it won't change anything.

I think the question to ask is "what does the idea of God imply ?", because no one can say this idea doesn't exist. Maybe we should examine what it is useful for, without thinking about faith or that sort of things, to determine whether it makes sense or not. And here, I don't totally agree with The_FD : God has something to do with rationality. Many philosophers rationaly demonstrate that God exists ; it's almost an exercise in style...! And even if we don't consider this, how do you guarantee reason or conscience ? How do you stop causality ? It isn't a matter of faith. I just mean that the idea of God is useful and can't be totally dismissed.
