Hello, today I am going to show you the project that I have been working on: the Öresund Bridge. The bridge will offer new travel possibilities to many Scandinavian vacationers. The Öresund Bridge, which will link Denmark to Sweden, will be completed in July of 2000. For all who have up to now considered the airlines as the fastest and most economical way (to get from Denmark to Sweden), there is now an intriguing alternative. The new structure links the Swedish city of Malmö with the Danish capital Copenhagen.
The strait between the two countries is barely 16 km wide. It will be spanned by the Öresund Bridge and a tunnel. The cost of this tremendous project is ca. 2 billion euro. Eventually ca. 10,000 vehicles daily will cross the bridge. The bridge will be designed for both automobiles and trains. The two travel methods will be integrated above each other. The 4-lane highway is on top. Ca. 8 m lower there are two tracks for railroad traffic. Obviously the bridge must not iinterfere with shipping and the Copenhagen Airport. There are also many environmental issue to be taken into consideration on both the Danish and the Swedish sides. When one departs from Malmö, one first drives over a 3.7 m long causeway to the actual suspension bridge. This cable suspension bridge is 1.09 km long. One then crosses another causeway to a 4 km long man-made island. From there one goes through a 3.7 km underwater tunnel and arrives in Copenhagen. Interference with incoming air traffic is thus avoided thanks to the tunnel.
The "Sundlink Contractors HB" is in charge of this project. This group is composed of Swedish, Danish and German teams. Construction started in 1995. The sea floor was prepared first. A total of 51 concrete pillars was installed for the causeways. The 49 component parts of the bridge were each 140 m long. The 80 suspension cables were installed by a French firm.
It should be evident to you that this project required an international team effort.
After this facility is completed, it will be possible for the first time to drive overland from mainland Europe to Scandinavia.
