The international discussion forum - View Single Post - Japanese or Mandarin, which should I learn?

hello everyone
I'm an english student soon to be studying Electronics at university, where I will have the opportunity to learn a language at the same time (not connected to my course). The two I have considered are Mandarin and Japanese, but which?

Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world, however Japan is the centre of commerce in the east and has alot of international influence. So i'm confused, does anybody have an opinion they can share with me?
