Well I'm a Chinese live and grow up in Beijing, so Chinese shouldn't be difficult for me. But unfortunately, our Chinese exams always make me crazy!~ Every character may have more than one pronouciation or meaning. And when you use, you have to figure out each one. And they always give you similar characters or ambiguity words and ask you which is wrong. I really hate that!
What's more, Chinese has a long history, so it means that if you only learn contemporary Chinese, you can't fully understand dialogues. We learn old Chinese reading, and have to remember each character's meaning and useages. Many words we use today comes from old words or stories which you have to remember. And ancestors did grammar differently from nowadays, so, remember both old and new If you want to read something from HongKong or Taiwan, you also need to know Traditional Chinese.I learnt that by reading comics~
But don't worry, since China has thousands of accents(southern has more than the north), locals, especially city people, are used to strange Chinese~~~And if you learn mandarin well, you can talk with most people here(students all learn mandarin at school).
